Snapshots of
Long Beach, California
The Ebell Club
“Built in 1924, The Ebell Club of Long Beach is a beautiful example of Churrigueresque-style architecture…that is characterized by the play of light and shade through lush cement ornamentation… From the polished marble entry, to the rare teak paneling, and the airy dining and reception rooms, the club quarters are a statement of a classic California elegance. In 2003 the Ebell Club was fully and carefully restored to its original beauty.”
“The Long Beach chapter of the nationwide Ebell Clubs was established in 1896 by president Adelaide Tichenor and 17 other women. One of Adelaide Tichenor’s many passions was education, especially reading. The first Ebell fundraiser in 1896 was a lawn party that raised $12.50 to buy books for the new Long Beach library.
In June of 2013, the women’s group dissolved after 117 years. “Members gave a final farewell gift of $l.176 million to the community to be shared equally among three charities: the Long Beach City College Foundation, Long Beach Public Library Foundation and Tichenor Orthopedic Clinic for Children.”
Today, the club is now an event center, hosting weddings and other special events.
