“House poor” is a term that is still very well used today, and I hear it quite often. Another way of saying it is “House rich, cash poor”. I was recently visiting my mother-in-law for the holidays and she pulled out the above vintage photo of her Dad and Mom in front of their first house purchase circa 1930. I know that I can talk about how different things were back then and how today’s house poor is not 80 years ago house poor, and maybe one day I will, but today I find it fascinating that for generations families have worked hard and spent all that they had saved to acquire that dreamy first house. And I’m sure young families for generations to come will work hard with a glowing ambition and a sharp determination to join our ranks and become… “house poor”.
